Joe Medway from Goulburn was on his way to Sydney with a load of equipment for setting up the exhibition on Sunday March 30 when, at Moss Vale he suffered a fatal heart attack.
Despite the prolonged CPR attempt by two nurses who were close by when he collapsed and then ambulance paramedics, he could not be revived.
Every year Joe would give a month of his time to help volunteers set up the Southern District exhibition at the Sydney Royal.
He was a quiet man and preferred to work behind the scenes but he was also quite competent called upon to spruik on a microphone.
Joe was also the trackside announcer at the Goulburn and District Racing Club and was responsible for setting up several public address systems including the one at St Saviours Cathedral where his funeral was held last Monday, April 7.
He had been a psychiatric nurse and worked in the mental health sector for 41 years before retiring to pursue more of his community interests.
He was a creative photographer and member of the Goulburn Camera Club, Legacy, the Goulburn and District Racing Club, served on the Goulburn AP&H and Southern District Show committee, Suicide Prevention Committee and was also prominent in local rugby league circles, lending his photographic talents to the clubs.
Joe’s sudden death at age 63 came as a shock to the community and the esteem in which he was held was reflected in the near capacity crowd at his funeral in St Saviour’s Cathedral.
