A NEW wilderness area has been declared in Kosciuszko National Park. Environment Minister Robyn Parker and the Member for Monaro John Barilaro last week announced the wilderness addition to the Goobarragandra Wilderness.

“The new area incorporates Pretty Sally Ridge which overlooks a scenic creek to the west of the wilderness area,” Ms Parker said.
“The Goobarragandra Wilderness protects a wide range of vegetation – from subalpine at the highest altitudes to wet sclerophyll forest at the lower altitudes.
The vegetation includes small areas of bog, fen and heath.”
Mr Barilaro said the area includes terrain that drops away steeply into the Goobarragandra River valley and spectacular gorges are found in its headwaters.
“Rare fauna in the area include the broad-toothed rat, Booroolong frog and the Corroboree frog. Threatened flora includes the nationally endangered Pomaderris cotoneaster,” Mr Barilaro said.
“This important wilderness area will continue to be actively managed to control fire, pests and weeds, while maintaining the wilderness values and pristine condition by limiting activities likely to damage flora, fauna and cultural heritage.”
The wilderness declaration does not alter any existing vehicle access to the national park or to neighbouring properties and does not place any additional restrictions on visitor activities.
