Over the decades it has served as a focal point for many families in the district whose members have become widely scattered.
The current parish members are hoping that families and any other interested community members will join them for the 150th anniversary of the Binda Parish on Sunday October 19 at 10.30am.
Former Rector Rt Rev Tom Frame will be the guest preacher and following the service a luncheon will be held in the Binda Memorial Hall.
The town of Binda prospered during the goldrush era. From the 1840s-1880s it was an important administrative centre.
As the gold prospectors moved on to the next goldfield so the town declined.
St James Anglican Church was built in 1864 in the early English Gothic Revival style and constructed from bluestone and quartzite with dressed sandstone sills and fine stained-glass windows, St James is a reminder of the status of the town in the 1860s.
Some of the family names on the memorials around the church include: Webster, Carr, Pollard, McDonald, Brownlow, Marks, Branson, Cramp, Johns, Fraser, Hones, Bates, Carruthers, Gilberts, McLoghlin, Pagetts, Laver, Armstrong, Mumford, Badgery, Kerr, Ashton, Bray, Johnston, King, Clements, Hetherington, Frame, Eldridge, and Rev Harry Hawkins.
Even if your family name is not listed and you think you may have some remote connection with the district, you are welcome to attend and experience this anniversary of Australian history.
For catering purposes people expecting to attend are asked to contact Beatrice Williams by October 10 on (02) 4832 1046 or mail PO Box 199 Crookwell 2583.
