October 7
TED O’Kane of the National Livestock Reporting Service commented it was a slightly larger but more mixed offering of 342 head after useful overnight rain of around 20mm.
Quality was generally plainer in the young cattle section with a fair percentage of plainly bred lots.
Condition also varied widely from the plain 1 scores to the over-fat lots which met restricted demand.
The mixed quality exaggerated a cheaper trend with most descriptions from 4c to 10c/kg easier on average.
Vealer steers to process made 185cto 205c with heifers from 165 to 190c/kg.
Restockers and feeders were active on a plainer run of yearling steers and paid 175 to 185c/kg for the C muscled lots.
Those to process made 175c to 198c/kg. The better shaped yearling heifers to kill made 165c to 188c with plainer lots from 140c to 160c/kg.
The few grown steers included some very well finished and high yielding heavy bullocks.
Most made from 170c to 192c/kg.
Grown heifers reached 178c/kg. A generally plainer selection of cows eased around 2c to 9c/kg and more for some plainer lots.
The D2s made 130c to 158c while 3 and 4 scores ranged from 152c to 170c/kg.
The best of the heavy bulls reached 200c/kg.
GOULBURN SHEEP October 8
TED O’Kane of the National Livestock Reporting Service commented numbers and quality lifted in an offering of around 1200 head.
There was a better selection of young lambs representing most weight categories and generally showing good freshness.
Old lambs were generally plainer and in smaller lots and included a fair percentage of Dorpers and merinos as consignments drop off.
With a few buyers absent the market had a cheaper trend of around $2 to $8/head.
Light young lambs 16kg to 18kg cwt made $83 to $94 with trade weights from $88 to $108/head.
A few well finished heavy weights made $110 to $120/head for most of the young lambs to average 440c to 470c/kg. In the old lambs section, light and trade weight merinos ranged from $58 to $76 while second cross trade weights made $74 to $91/head.
Heavy weights over 22kg made $96 to $118/head for most to average 380c to 440c/kg.
Sheep numbers were back slightly to 1600 head but quality was good overall.
There were plenty of lots showing good weight and condition as spring pasture growth provides ideal conditions for producers to turn off surplus sheep following shearing.
The market was solid with prices mostly firm to a shade cheaper.
Medium and heavy ewes ranged from $65 to $85 with a fair selection of wethers making $66 to $96/head, the latter for very heavy crossbreds.
Most of the better covered sheep averaged 290c to 315c/kg cwt.
