“I have long been convinced of the economic opportunities of the Port of Eden redevelopment,” Dr Hendy said.
The site investigations will include condition assessment of the existing Breakwater Wharf as well as geotechnical and environmental investigations for the Breakwater Wharf Extension and the Safe Boating Options study.
Eden is currently used as an occasional stop over for cruise ships.
The Breakwater Wharf Extension Project will allow cruise ships up to 260 metres to dock at the port.
“It is anticipated there will be an increase in the number of cruise ships stopping in Eden once construction is complete,” said Dr Hendy.
The Breakwater Wharf Extension is estimated at a cost of $15 million with contributions from the Federal Government, the NSW State Government, and the Bega Valley Shire Council. The Federal Government contributed $10 million to the project.
“The Port of Eden redevelopment will generate economic activity through an increase in cruise ship visits, as well as increased opportunities for local tourism and business.
“We can expect to see an increase in visits to existing local attractions like the Whale Museum and Sapphire Coast Marine Centre,” Dr Hendy said.
“That is why the economic case for this project is so strong and why I been such a strong supporter,” Dr Hendy said.
The investigations, beginning today, are expected to continue for approximately two to three weeks, weather permitting.
On-site construction is scheduled to commence in mid-2015.
