In the Toy Group, which includes breeds like French poodles, Pomeranians, Pekingese, Maltese, Pugs, Brussels Griffons, Papillons and Australian Silky Terriers to name a few there were 545 entries.
This year’s Best in the Toy Group resides in Goulburn with Rebecca Sheridan-McVicar who obtained her Pomeranian from Queensland breeder Kim Haddon.
Mrs Sheridan-McVicar is the owner of Chris Christensen Australia and, her business is the national distributor of the high quality dog, cat and other animal grooming products.
“I grew up in a dog showing and breeding family,” Mrs Sheridan-McVicar said.
“My mum bred miniature Dachshunds and I breed Boston Terriers.
“I have Jay as a hobby, he is a baby and a lot of fun.
“I got him to learn more about long double coated dogs, the Boston Terriers are short hair smooth coated dogs, much different to groom than Pomeranians and he has become a poster boy for our grooming products.”
Jay, kennel name Champion Zeigen Justice ov the Peace earned his prefix Champion at the Sydney Show.
He was selected as the Challenge winner, Best puppy of all the pomeranian puppies, and Best Dog in the Breed, this alone is fairly unusual for a puppy to be favoured by the judge over a more mature animal.
Zeigen Justice ov the Peace then went on to win Best Puppy in the Toy Group and to cap off breed champion award he was awarded Best in the Toy Group.
This win has been a big thrill for breeder Kim Haddon who had not achieved such an honour from Australia’s largest and most prestigious dog show.
“I knew Jay was really something special when I first got him and it is a real honour to show him and work with him,” Mrs Sheridan-McVicar said.
“He has his own personal groomer, preparing him for a show is a real team effort and Darren Skipworth is an international professional groomer, well known for his ability to present top show dogs.
“I am really grateful to Darren for his work with Jay.
“He loves to be groomed and is a great house dog but he also likes to play outside too.
He is a very friendly dog and loves attention. “Jay has an amazing coat and he is a real show-off in the ring and loves the attention.
The more the crowd cheers the better he performs which is really something special in a puppy.
Anyone who wants to own a pomeranian must be prepared to brush and groom them regularly, at least weekly.
They are not a breed to be clipped off, they need to be brushed out.
If you are prepared to put in the time, a dog like Jay will certainly make a good pet and loyal companion.
Jay is my pet but he has also helped me to learn more about double coated dogs and our Chris Christensen grooming products.”
Goulburn district and wider south eastern area did particularly well in the Sydney Royal Easter Show dog ring with several breeders picking up best in very large classes, best in breed or other high honours.
They included Mrs C Alderton from Bungonia Heights with the Best Puppy in the Tenterfield Terriers.
Miss D Howell had a Best in Breed win and Challenge win in the Schipperkes.
Mrs J Roberts won the Best in Breed and Challenge winner in the open German Shorthaired pointers, Third in the Working Dogs was a Border Collie exhibited by Mr W Morgan and Mrs M Morgan of Exeter, runner up in the utility Group was Miss A Forsberg of Gundaroo’s Shibu Inu and Mrs S Plackett from Hill Top showed the Runner Up Non Sporting Dog with her Shih Tzu.
