Hundreds of people are connected with this historic Church in many different ways.
Originally built for the staff of Kameruka, the Church has continued to be used for marriages, funerals and baptisms in particular by descendants of Kameruka employees.
An annual service of worship is held each year in October which is followed by an inspection of the homestead gardens and a BYO picnic at the Lords View Cricket oval on the Estate.
Kameruka Estate was sold in 2007 which heralded the departure of the last remaining descendant of the Lucas- Tooth family.
The church has since been maintained by volunteers who have overseen a very significant maintenance and repair programme in 2014.
There is heartfelt view that over time there is a danger that interest could wane and that maintenance may not be managed as it should.
We are talking about the next 100 years and beyond!
To this end a group is being formed to be known as ‘Friends of Holy Trinity Kameruka’.
Its sole purpose is to ensure that there will always be an ongoing number of people who can ‘pass the baton’ to those coming along in the many years ahead.
Initial interest has been very strong and in particular from people have relatives buried in the Kameruka cemetery.
Others just simply want to be able to take a part in the preservation of both the church and cemetery.
“We have got about 40 people who have expressed their interest in wanting to become Friends of Kameruka,” Mr MacQueen said.
“And thanks to the wonders of email and the Internet, we could potentially have more than 1,000 in the Friends of Kameruka group.
In 2014 repairs and maintenance included painting of the entry fence, renewal of the sign, and a complete clean of the War Memorial.
Through a grant, the exterior of the church has been painted.
Internally the floor of the entrance has been polished and two of three missing (for 30-40 years) pews have been reinstalled in their rightful home.
The church, the grounds and the cemetery are the best they have looked for a number of years.
We are seeking families and people who are interested to be a part of the Friends of Holy Trinity Kameruka.
An appeal is being made to contact the chair of the group and be listed as a Friend.
It is not an appeal for money and not an appeal for labour. Simply be someone who has a connection or affection for the church to be recorded as a Friend, and to receive communications in the future about anything planned for the church.
The new group have already discussed a number of visions for the church and events that would be appropriate.
Prior to leaving Kameruka Estate, original owners Mr & Mrs Frank and Odile Foster hosted a ‘Back to Kameruka Day’ back in September 2007.
It was an outstanding success and estimates at the time suggested 4000 people attended.
A service was at the Church and over 250 people attended.
“At one stage there were 146 families working on the property,” Mr MacQueen said.
“So there are many hundreds, even thousands, of people who have direct links to Kameruka and it is these people we are particularly keen to find.
Our grand ambition is to create a data base that will enable the history to be kept alive through ongoing communication.
Within the Bega Valley itself there are hundreds of descendants of Kameruka employees and we are starting our appeal here to encourage local interest which in itself we believe will go a long way to getting us started.”
