THE Australian Wind Alliance’s (AWA) Mhairi Fraser says the final report from the Senate Inquiry into Wind Turbines represents “a particularly low point” in the history of renewable energy in Australia.

“Enough wind bashing,” Mrs Fraser said.
“AWA members from the Goulburn Region who spoke to the Inquiry in support of local wind farms can attest to the hostile attitude of most of the Senators during the proceedings.
“A simple reading of transcripts from the Inquiry shows that it was more focused on anti wind muckraking than on a genuine Inquiry conducted in the community’s interest.”
In relation to the Inquiry’s findings of planning and compliance deficiencies in the wind industry to date, Ms Fraser said the industry in Australia was relatively young and state planning regimes were “playing catch up.”
“There are examples of good and poor community engagement as a result,” she said.
“Opportunities for wider benefit sharing have been slow in coming and many communities have been hijacked by a vocal few opposed to wind farms.
“In Europe, policy settings make benefit sharing commonplace and there is a very high level of acceptance of wind farms and virtually no reports of health impacts.
“On environmental assessment grounds, many submissions to the Senate Inquiry from field experts showed that the environmental assessment standards for wind farm developments in Australia far exceed international standards for wind farms and those required by the coal and gas industry.
“None of this evidence was cited in the final Report.”
Mrs Fraser said the Senate Inquiry had no grounds on which to claim that infrasound and low frequency sound from wind farms may be having adverse affects on human health.
“In a scandalous omission, they even failed to include the most comprehensive study undertaken in this area because the findings did not fit with their conclusions,” she said.
“In 2012 Health Canada commissioned a $2.1 million longitudinal study to investigate the health effects of exposure to low frequency and infrasound from wind turbines.
“The report was released in 2014 and concluded that no correlation could be made between wind turbines and the symptoms reported by those claiming to be affected.
“Will the Australian Government continue to waste taxpayer dollars to replicate such a study to appease a disgruntled fringe and hold back Australia’s renewable energy future?”
Mrs Fraser said the possible future requirement for wind farms to comply with national noise standards in order to retain their RECs would interfere with the Renewable Energy Target and see Federal incursion into State responsibilities.
“It is clearly a ruse to strangle the Industry in red tape,” she said.
“The Senate Inquiry has been a farce and its findings should be rejected. Minister Hunt is already distancing himself from the Report.
So should all Australians.”
