The prize was opened last Wednesday, April 20, at the Gallipoli Memorial Club in Loftus St, Sydney.
Lynne’s painting (pictured) depicts her grandfather Charles (Les) Webster, who was a WWI lighthorseman, and his comrades.
The artwork, ‘I may have changed’, is based on a sepia photograph where Les identified himself with a cross next to his face.
Mullane said she’d always wondered why Les thought his mother might not recognise him after he had experienced warfare.
He was wounded in the war and suffered ill health for many years.
Les died at age 69 in 1965 when Mullane was in primary school.
She remembers him as an old man, but when she gazes into his young face, she imagines him as young, proud to serve, and courageous.
The exhibition at the Gallipoli Memorial Club is open 10am to 4pm, April 21 to 29 (except Anzac Day).
