At the next Small Farms Network – Capital Region event, nationally acclaimed author and expert on horse property management, Stuart Myers, will deliver a seminar of value not only to horse owners, but the wider environment in which they live.
Myers will deliver a seminar in Bywong for the Small Farms Network – Capital Region on how to improve horse property management and create a sustainable equine lifestyle.
During the seminar, horse owners will learn how to use their horses’ natural and domesticated behaviours combined with good pasture management principles to manage their properties in an economical and sustainable way.
The information presented at this seminar will include: the relationship between horses and their pastures; managing health issues such as laminitis and equine obesity; how to manage manure, water and vegetation; reducing parasite burdens and controlling weeds; how to manage pasture for horses and encourage biodiversity; and how to plan and design a horse property.
The aim of the seminar is to educate horse property managers about the value of sound property management practices, not only in terms of horse care, horse health and financial benefits but also aesthetic improvements to their property.
Just as importantly, significant environmental benefits flow from sound management, including the positive effects on water catchment, weed control, erosion and the benefits to the wider community. It also focuses on growing the correct grasses and other pasture species in order to reduce the feed bill, while maintaining good ground cover, reducing erosion and run-off.
The Small Farms Network is supported by funding from the Australian Government and this event is made possible by in-kind support and contributions from the South East Local Lands Services and the ACT Regional Landcare Coordinator. The Palerang Action Network for Sustainability also provides voluntary support.
