The whales hanging close to the shoreline caught the attention of passersby at Bar Beach where they moved to within metres of the surfers.
Some onlookers thought a whale came in to give birth, others thought one was injured, but they could have just been relaxing as Southern Right Whales are famous for lounging about just behind the waves.
Photographer Debbie Osiecki said because of this people believed the whales were the same ones spotted in Tathra on Friday, July 21.
The Quaama resident said she could not believe her luck when she saw the whales.
“It was the first time I’ve seen whales and they were there for hours,” she said.
Ms Osiecki wanted the public to know that the surfers did not move towards the whale, they were at the break and the whale moved towards them.
