An emphasis on key commercial traits in the breeding program at Springwaters Poll Dorset Stud has developed a consistent line of rams, producing top quality prime lambs for their clients.
Heavy muscling, early maturity and consistency are major profit drivers for lamb producers targeting trade and export markets.
Springwaters rams deliver these attributes for their clients, giving them market flexibility and the best chance to obtain maximum prices for their lambs.
Springwaters rams are renowned for their high growth rates at an early age, making them ideally suited for sucker production.
The flock rams are finished on grass, without grain supplementation, ensuring purchasers can be confident that the muscling and carcase shape in sale rams will be displayed in the progeny.
It has been a successful year for the stud with progeny of their rams achieving premium prices over the hooks and in the sale yards.
Combined with this, show ring success has been plentiful.
Springwaters ‘Pocock’ has been awarded Supreme Prime Lamb Exhibit at the Sydney Royal Easter show and Supreme Exhibit at the NSW Dorset Championships.
‘Pocock’ is considered the best ram Springwaters have bred, winning his accolades primarily on the back of his huge muscling and conformation.
Over 40 rams by the same sire will be offered in their annual ram sale on September 29.
The stud has also won performance classes at both shows. In these classes, points are awarded for structural soundness, breed type, weight for age and eye muscle area, making them very commercially relevant.
The Rowley family supplies rams to producers throughout the state.
"We focus on breeding commercial rams,” co-principle Dane Rowley said.
“It's nice to come up with a few elite animals, but for us, it's about putting together a line of rams from lot 1 to lot 175.
"We are selling more rams to clients who take a very professional approach to prime lamb production and they are giving us a lot of feedback that helps us align our breeding program with their bottom line".
The stud will hold its annual ram sale on Friday, September 29 at 1pm on property at ‘Corcorans Plains.’ Boorowa.
175 rams will be offered for sale, lunch will be provided and anyone interested in inspecting the rams are more than welcome.
