The Luana Poll Dorset stud was founded in 1979 by Ian and Brian Moloney.
Initially, the stud was both Dorset Horn and Poll Dorset but since the early 1990’s, it has consisted solely of Poll Dorsets.
Over the years, Ian purchased sires from many different studs – Pinewalla, Tattykeel, Armdale and Aberdeen being just a few.
In recent years, sires have been purchased from Springwaters, Hillden, Sunnybanks (Tasmania), Armdale, Geredan and Pinewalla.
In 2009, Ian sadly passed away and his sons, Adam and Luke, together with Adam’s wife, Kathryne and their son, Jason, moved back to the farm to continue the legacy left by their parents.
Luana Poll Dorset stud had its first on property sale in 2010, which proved to be successful and this year will mark the eight annual sale on property.
Early on, Dorset ewes were renowned to have trouble lambing, according to Adam and Luke.
“We have some not so fond memories of placing the ewes, on a cold winter’s night, into the boot of the Kingswood (the only form of off road vehicle we had) to take to the shearing shed to assist with the birth,” the brothers said.
“These days Dorsets rarely have to be attended to at all during lambing.
“Our aim is to produce big, early maturing, well muscled sheep with clean heads and points that are structurally correct.”
The partnership also runs 3000 crossbred ewes, which lamb May to June, to turn the lambs off in November.
Lambs are sold over the hook or saleyards depending on prices. Residual lambs are finished on grain and crops to be sold in March and April, depending on the season.
“We enjoy great support selling our rams locally, and our clients have been able to breed for a specific market,” the Moloney’s said.
“Luana lambs are highly sought after by meat buyers and have often topped Wagga Wagga and Yass livestock markets”.
In recent years, due to ease of lambing, clients have purchased Luana rams to join with Merino and Dohne ewes.
Luana’s annual sale will be held on Saturday, November 25, at the property in Taralga, offering around 60 rams for sale.
