The Gabo Island Lighthouse Reserve has been temporarily closed since March to undertake essential large-scale upgrade works to buildings within the lightstation and jetty area.
Some minor construction works are still underway on the Island, due to slight delays caused by inclement weather but work is expected to be completed by late June 2017.
William McCutcheon the Parks Victoria District Manager of East Gippsland said they require visitors and guests to stay out of fenced-off areas and follow the directions on any signage in the park.
“We took the opportunity during the quieter autumn period to undertake construction works that will provide our day visitors and overnight guests with safer facilities.
“Ageing roofs have been replaced to ensure preservation of National Heritage listed buildings that are exposed to the island’s harsh environmental conditions,” Mr McCutcheon said.
“Our inability to complete all of the planned works during the closure period is unfortunate, but visitor safety is paramount as the work continues.”
Visitors are advised to stay clear of construction zones during this time.
Accommodation bookings for the Gabo Lightstation cottages are now open and we encourage guests to visit parkstay.vic.gov.au to check for the latest availability and information.
