Angela Di Georgio has embraced the opportunities to extend her university experience well beyond just the classroom.
Hailing from the Illawarra, Angela has spent five years at Sancta Sophia College, completing her Bachelor of Economics and then moving onto postgraduate studies with a Juris Doctorate in Law, which she will finish this year.
Sancta Sophia College was founded in 1926 and today caters for 160 undergraduate women and 128 postgraduate men and women studying at University of Sydney, UTS and Notre Dame. It is a safe and supportive home away from home where residents can be involved in a range of leadership, cultural, spiritual, sporting and recreational activities.
“The best thing about the last five years at Sancta has been the opportunities to grow both as a person and professionally, through the options to participate in sports, cultural events or leadership roles,” Angela said.
“For me, this has included being Drama Secretary in my second year, and more recently Law Academic Mentor. It was really exciting being in a position to invite the Australian Human Rights Commissioner Edward Santow to speak at an event for our law students and alumni. That was a fantastic night.
“Whether you're an undergraduate or postgraduate at Sancta, the friendships, community and sense of security are arguably the most important aspects of college life. Get involved in things, and you have more opportunities to make friends. That said, don't limit yourself to college either: it's also important build friendships at uni too.”
Angela has experienced college life as both an undergrad and a postgrad and she said Sancta caters perfectly for both types of student.
“Undergrads can really immerse themselves in the whole college and university experience and attend the many events put on by Sancta and the intercollege community, which is especially important if you're not from Sydney. If you're a postgrad, the community here is full of mature, intelligent and hardworking people who also love to have fun.”
Principal, Dr Marie Leech, said that Sancta Sophia College offers its students a supportive environment to allow them to embrace all that university life affords.
“We are the only postgraduate community on the campus at the University of Sydney, so our community is unique. Students, like Angela, can transition from undergraduate studies to postgraduate pursuits seamlessly,” Dr Leech said.
“We offer the right balance leading to academic success and social interactions that support the growth and development of our students to equip them for the challenges that lie after university.”
