NSW Health urges residents to avoid contact with bats

Southern NSW Local Health District is urging residents to avoid contact with bats after reports of increased numbers in the region. Bats and flying foxes can carry harmful bacteria and viruses, including the potentially deadly lyssavirus.

While there have been no cases of human infection with lyssavirus in NSW, people should still be cautious at all times. Anyone finding an injured or distressed bat should never pick it up but call their local wildlife rescue group.
