Spirit Allegro will be performing music Inspired by Folk. “We’ve put together a program of music which reflects the diverse heritage of the members of our choir with music from France, Norway, Germany, the British Isles and of course Australia,” music director David Francis said. “A lot of the songs we are singing tell tales of love and lost love and many of the tunes will be familiar.
“We’ve got a drinking song and a lullaby in the mix and promise to send the audience home singing!” Catch Spirit Allegro’s performances at Twyford Hall, Merimbula on Saturday and Wolumla Memorial Hall on Sunday. Both performances start at 2pm.
Heartsong will be performing a program of Music to Warm your Heart, with their first performance in their home of St John’s Bega at 7pm on Saturday evening. They will be joined by members of Bega District Brass Band and together they will bring the warmth and joy of choral singing to a winter’s night. Heartsong will then present a second concert in Quaama School of Arts Hall on Sunday afternoon at 1pm.
Heartsong’s music director Geoffrey Badger said the program spans five centuries of “sublime choral music” including Byrd, Bruckner and Tallis. “The rich sound of The Bega District Brass Band combined with the choir will warm your heart and lift your soul,” Mr Badger said.
These concerts reflect what a significant pastime singing is within the community. Most nights of the week, people get together to sing and rehearse in towns up and down the South Coast. Earlier this month, four local choirs came together to raise funds to bring a choir from East Timor to Australia in 2020, and choirs from Eurobodalla and Bega Valley Shires will gather for The Spring Sing at Four Winds in September for a day celebrating singing and the communities that sing together.
