"If there is a farm turning a dollar, I've covered it. Cattle, sheep, pearl farming, marijuana, you name it, I've seen it," she said.
Venturing behind the gates of 551 properties, Mabin created The Grower, a two-part photo book series that looks at the beauty and the hardship of regional Australia.
“In this region – Southern Highlands, Illawarra and Southern Tablelands – most farms are boutique operations. But that in no way reflects the size of their passion and dedication,” Mabin said.
“Whether it’s Pecora Dairy in Robertson, Maple Ridge goat dairy in Falls Creek, or Pelican Station and Marianvale Blue in Goulburn, these guys are dedicated to their amazing produce and their entrepreneurial spirit is what gets them on the market.”
Australia’s environment and climate are among the most challenging on Earth for food production. For that reason, Mabin said Australian farmers lead the world in conservation methods.
“Marianvale Blue use a recirculated aquaculture system that ensures their water usage and volume of waste is kept to an absolute minimum. They have pioneered sustainable fish farming,” she said.
“We’re one of the few countries left in the world that almost entirely feeds itself. Agriculture is a vibrant industry that many Australians have lost touch with. My books are about bridging that divide.”
newsXpress Mittagong will host Alice Mabin for a book signing this Saturday, August 18 from 10:30am to 12:30pm.
