In response to a company sponsored survey, 22 per cent of children said they either didn’t enjoy gardening or had not tried it.
One in three children also thought food came from the supermarket as opposed to its original source, like a farm or garden patch.
“Rather than have a bunch of adults lecture kids on getting into the backyard, Yates is empowering our young gardeners to inspire their peers,” says Angie Thomas, horticulture consultant to Yates.
“In addition to being good fun, there’s a bunch of reasons to get kids in the garden including physical activity, fresh air, and even mindfulness … If children don’t get the opportunity to play in the dirt, it’s thought to contribute to an increased risk of allergies, asthma and mental illness.”
Parents and guardians can enter a mini gardening guru, aged up to 16 years, in the competition on the ‘Yates Gardening’ Facebook page. Or, check out the Australia’s Next Top Gardener website. The winner will be chosen by a panel of judges on behalf of Yates.
The winner will become the face of Yates’ new gardening website for children, and their gardening tips and tricks will be shared through Yates’ social media channels and Yates’ national garden club.
Australia’s Next Top Gardener and family will travel to the Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show in March 2019 on an expenses paid, three-night trip.
The competition is open until Sunday October 14.
