They were just pipped at the post by Southern Highlands school, Chevalier College. Nowra High School took out runner's up, while Vincentia High School also impressed the judges.
Three-hundred students from 16 schools, up from last year's 10, descended upon Nowra Showground on May 7 and 8.
The students had been caring for a steer for the past 13 weeks. They presented their steer for the first part of the 'hoof and hook' competition at Nowra, before the hoof competition took place on May 11 at Milton District Meats.
The competition is organised by the South Coast Beef Producers Association and encourages students to immerse themselves in animal handling, agribusiness, and animal science.
Organiser Rob Stafford said the second annual event went "brilliantly", with even more schools getting on board for next year's competition.
He commended the local teams for their efforts.
"The local teams did extra well. The teachers here are not only highly competitive, but very skilled cattle feeders and trainers," he said.
Jervis Bay Meat Company bought the champion carcass, while Rosebank Quality Meats in Kiama bought the reserve champion carcass. Mr Stafford said the meat will be available for purchase in about a week's time.
Steers are provided by association members and feed given by Manildra Stockfeeds.
