Pinewalla Dorset Stud celebrates 50 years of breeding, and it is a milestone the family are very proud of.
"I was just 10 years old when Dad bought a handful of ewes to establish the Pinewalla Stud," says co-owner Kim Weir.
"This led to a passion in breeding Poll Dorsets. We now run 340 stud ewes producing stud and flock rams for our annual on-property ram sale."
Mr Weir continues to run the stud alongside wife Jenny and son James who is also a co-owner and looking to carry forward the family legacy.
Having grown up around the family farm "he [James] has grown a passion for the stud as well," Mr Weir proudly states.
Looking back, he says "It's been a very rewarding experience over the years. We have ram clients who still support us after all those years. The friendship generated from clients and fellow stud breeders will always be valued."

At the moment "We look forward to our 2019 sale with confidence. The feedback from clients on the back of a buoyant lamb market has been most encouraging."
Among the recent highlights for Pinewalla's clients, Mr Weir wanted to pass on his "Congratulations to the Mooney Family, Currawang Goulburn for their National Saleyard record price of $354.20 at Wagga in June."
Also, "Lambs bred by Chattsworth Pastoral, Binda sold at Wagga in July topped at $326 - for an average of $300 - for the 141 August drop cross lambs."
Plus, "The Picker Family, Pleasantview Binda, along with a number of clients, sold sucker lambs straight off mum around the Christmas period in excess of $200.
"We are very proud of their achievements. Our breeding program at Pinewalla is totally focused in the production of prime lambs."
Mr Weir explained that "All Stud lambs are weighed at birth, at weaning (approximately 100 days) then again around 200 days for a post-weaning weight which gives an indication firstly of the birth weight then a growth weight.
"Eye muscle and fat recording is also taken at 200 days to give us a detailed evaluation of each lamb that is bred.
"These figures then relate to the production of prime lambs, given this evaluation is being done at a similar age to the client's prime lamb operation. We have also targeted sires in our breeding program with high indexes for eating quality; a major focus now being implemented by processors.
"This genetic trait in our rams will also be of benefit."
80 Poll Dorset rams including 10 specially selected rams, along with 20 White Suffolk rams, will be offered on Monday November 4, on-property at Pinewalla Crookwell.
"We look forward to catching up with our clients on sale day."
