You also need a backup plan in case something goes wrong.
Impact by a bush fire can be a very traumatic and stressful experience.
By planning ahead for such an event and having plans in place for what to do in those circumstances will greatly assist residents in managing the situation.
Depending on residents preferred option a plan should be prepared for either “Staying to defend a well prepared home” or “Leaving early”.
However, we strongly recommend that residents prepare a plan for both situations; whilst leaving early may be a preferred option if the fire impacts suddenly without warning and there is insufficient time to safely leave then also having a plan to stay and defend will be very useful.
Bush Fire Survival Plan books are free and available from the local Brigade or may be downloaded directly from the NSW RFS website www.rfs.nsw.gov.au
Brigades are happy to provide the plans and to also provide some guidance to help residents to get them started in preparing plans.
